The concern is whether or not natural processes can re-establish the stalled Loop Current. If not, we could begin to see global crop failures as early as 2011, as a result of these man-caused Earth Changes.
This is scary, and fortunately, unsubstantiated. But it does appear that the city of New Orleans is a sort of 'ground zero' for the dramatic linkage of two planetary cycles with relevance to the environment. These are the 128 year Uranus-Pluto cycle that began 10/4/65, and the 20 year Jupiter-Saturn('Great Conjunction') cycle born on 5/28/00.
The Uranus-Pluto conjunctions of 1965-66 in the earth sign of Virgo, correlated with a mass awakening to environmental and ecological concerns, i.e. pollution, sustainability, etc. While the May 28, 2000 Jupiter-Saturn conjunction at 23 Taurus(earth sign), is the last of a series that began in 1842 with the start of the modern, industrial revolution, and a period of seemingly unlimited natural resources.
Moreover, these two key cycles that are synchronously joined in New Orleans, are both in crucial phases of unfoldment. Although the first of seven exact Uranus-Pluto squares that suggest massive change and revolutionary upheavals does not occur until 6/24/12- coincidental with the Mayan prophecies of 2012, these planets are already having an effect. And the current Full Moon phase(opposition) of Jupiter and Saturn- the 'great chronocrators'(rulers of time), from May 2010 to April 2011, marks the peak of a cycle related to the natural ebb and flow of empires and economies, that ends in 2020.
Disaster stricken New Orleans is a focal point of the world trends reflected by the linkage of two major cycles informing a growing environmental and ecological consciousness, that may be imperative to our survival on planet earth.

Below are two thoughtful articles about the Gulf oil spill disaster that seem to touch on the archetypal and mythic themes related to this epochal event.
The Ecological Disaster: Polluting the Waters of Life, by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee
"Earlier in the year I posted a series of articles about the need to regain a symbolic consciousness -- the need to see the symbolic meaning of events that happen in our inner and outer lives. Recently we have been witnessing the worst ecological disaster in North America with the oil gushing from the depths of the Gulf. We have heard the anger of politicians, the fear of fishermen and others for their livelihood, and the futility of BP to stem this ecological disaster and stop the oil from polluting the shoreline and the sea. But have we been able to look beyond this tragic play of events to recognize the symbolic story that is being told? Can we learn what life is telling us before it is too late?"

The Gulf Oil Spill as the Unfolding of Prophecy, by Daniel Pinchbeck
"As someone who has written extensively on indigenous prophecies relating to this time, it is hard for me to escape the uneasy presentiment that the massive, ceaseless, devastating cascade of what may be more than 100,000 barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico each day – apparently still mixed with the far more toxic dispersant Corexit that British Petroleum continues to inject, despite EPA objections – is anything but the inception of a new phase in the foretold unfolding of events that may terminate most life on earth, potentially leading to the rapid extinction of the human species. Recent articles reveal that there is a gigantic bubble of methane gas underneath the Gulf of Mexico, which has helped to create the enormous pressure that makes it unlikely, if not impossible, that the Deepwater Horizon oil spill can be stopped by human means. Video taken by undersea robots show oil and gas leaking from many fissures in the earth, far beyond the range of the well hole. This suggests that the underground containment structure is cracking apart. If the current effort to build relief wells fails or is ineffective, there are no more known technological fixes available."
