Total Solar Eclipse on July 22
"On Wednesday, 2009 July 22, an exceptionally long total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses the Eastern Hemisphere. The path of the Moon’s umbral shadow begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, and China. After leaving mainland Asia, the path crosses Japan’s Ryukyu Islands and curves southeast through the Pacific Ocean where the maximum duration of totality reaches 6 min 39 s (Espenak and Anderson 2006). A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the Moon’s penumbral shadow, which includes most of eastern Asia, Indonesia, and the Pacific Ocean." Read More

hi david,
i came across your while researching the astrological significance of a total solar eclipse. i'm particularly interested in the significance of the eclipse that occurred two days ago. there's a real lack of information on the internet about this subject. i'm wondering if you would be so kind as to discuss this event from the standpoint of your astrological knowledge, particularly vedic. i'd be happy to correspond with you privately if it's not something you wish to blog about.
thank you.
Hello,
Well, I'm not a Vedic astrologer, although I dabble a bit. The path of the total solar eclipse did pass over India, Burma, Bangladesh, and southern China. So tradition suggests these locations are subject to the influence of this eclipse for as many years, as minutes, the eclipse was in effect for those places. In other words- if the eclipse lasted 3 minutes, it will have an effect for up to 3 years. That is the traditional point of view, which I don't fully subscribe to. But at least the ancients had clear rules for such events. I think most modern astrologers consider a solar eclipse to have an influence until the next solar eclipse, 6 months later.
The eclipse we just had was extraordinary in terms of length, which may be partly a result of the perigee(closest to earth) Moon.
I do think we will some natural disasters in those nations where the eclipse was visible- but most of those are predisposed to natural or man-made disasters anyway. It's my feeling as of this writing, that Burma, Bangladesh, and China, may be directly hit by the latent power of the eclipse. This latent power could be released when Mars aligns with the eclipse degree about Oct. 15- and later whenever Mars reaches the 29th degree of a cardinal sign. If we subscribe to the ancient view that the eclipse has importance for years to come- then Saturn squaring the eclipse degree(29 Cancer) in 2012 is a possible trigger.
Any US chart for July 1776 has Pluto near the end of Capricorn, which means this eclipse, and the one in Jan. 2010, are both activating the US Pluto. I think this is a reflection of the financial crisis, and the challenges the US is facing regarding it's power and control- esp. as it relates to economic power.
