Introduction:
"Since both the Maya calendar and their metaphorical stories are based on the underlying astronomy, it can be very helpful to learn about this astronomy and this is fun and fairly easy to do as long as we take it a little bit at a time. Even still, you may find yourself pondering this subject more deeply for quite awhile. For me personally, the more I dug into the actual astronomy of 2012, the more mind-blowing it all became. Perhaps you will have a similar experience.

During this introduction, I will give an overview of this essay and clarify some common misunderstandings. I intentionally have my title reflecting both the solid science of 2012 and also its metaphorical aspects in order to let people know that I am not going to “squeeze the wonder and awe out of the event” by “explaining it” with science.

While I address the metaphorical and mystical aspects of 2012 much further in another essay, here I am focused on the details of the actual mainstream astronomy. I include my own original research so this essay is therefore not a rehash of what you might have read elsewhere.
