Eclipses, Obama, and Grand Conjunctions

*This is my response to an internet peer inquiring about the significance of eclipses- especially as they pertain to President elect Barack Obama.

I'm no expert on eclipses, but I've done some research of my own. According to William Lilly, eclipses have the greatest influence on nations, rather than individuals. And a quick look at the eclipses surrounding Obama's birth, appears to confirm strong links with the Jupiter-Saturn cycle of that period, and therefore with the ebb and flow of global developments. Eclipses occur within a broader context that's important to consider- just as we do in our work with individual clients, when looking at transits.

The total solar eclipse(26 Aquarius 25) of Feb. 15, 1961 that preceeded Obama's birth, opposed Uranus(modern ruler), with the ancient ruler Saturn(25 Capricorn) conjunct Jupiter(24 Capricorn) near the eclipse chart IC(4th cusp- 20 Capricorn) at Honolulu. In this case, the 1961 Grand Conjunction is highlighted by angularity in the eclipse chart, and note Obama's connection with this particular synodic cycle(Ascendant ruler Saturn -0- 1961 Grand Conjunction). Also worth noting, is that this pre-natal eclipse conjoins Mr. Obama's natal South Node of 'spiritual destiny'.
If you cast the Feb. 15, 1961(8:19:15 GMT) eclipse for Washington, DC, we find the Midheaven = 14 Libra = 7/4/1776 Saturn(14 Libra), and the eclipse Jupiter-0-Saturn angular in the 1st house.

The Feb. 15, 1961 solar eclipse is part of Saros series 120, which began May 27, 933, 4:10:41 GMT, according to Espenak. At Washington, DC, the eclipse MC = 27 Scorpio = Node 25 Scorpio = Jupiter 28 Taurus. Obama's natal Midheaven at 29 Scorpio, is symbolic of who he is in the world- status, and reputation. The eclipse Ascendant at 7 Aquarius is ruled by Saturn(19 Aquarius), which conjoins Obama's natal Ascendant at 18 Aquarius. Of course, it's easy to see these connections in hindsight- but they are amazing contacts nevertheless.

The Aug. 11, 1961(10:46:14 GMT) solar eclipse at 18 Leo 31, has the Midheaven in Honolulu at 21 Aquarius, conjunct Obama's natal Ascendant. And transiting Neptune exactly stationed at 21 Aquarius on Nov. 2, 2008! The 1961 eclipse Ascendant = 4 Gemini = Obama's Moon at 3 Gemini.

The 8/1/08 solar eclipse that fell 3 days before Barack Obama's birthday, is part of Saros 126, which began Mar. 10, 1179, 7:39:51,GMT(Espenak). This first eclipse at 26 Pisces, does not aspect Obama's chart- but the two rulers of the eclipse do link up nicely. Eclipse Jupiter at 16 Aquarius, is on Mr. Obama's Ascendant(18 Aquarius), and eclipse Neptune(1 Aquarius) conjoins his natal Jupiter(1 Aquarius)! These are remarkable contacts, that are clearly meaningful in light of his current rise to world prominence.

Quotes from the great William Lilly:
In Annus Tenobrosus(2) (Dark Year,1652) William Lilly writes, "Eclipses of the luminaries have the greatest influence upon cities, provinces and Kingdoms, more forcibly than upon men of private condition."

'To Know what kingdom or City the effects shall belong':
"In every great Eclipse of the Sun and Moon you must observe the place in the zodiac, that is in which of the twelve signs the defect is in and consider the Kingdoms, cities or countries subject unto that sign, according to their several distributions. You are also to take notice of the midheaven, viz., or sign culminating of the King or Principle Govenor of the Kingdom , Metropolitan City or country or if at his birth either of the lights were near the degree eclipsed... if you have the Ascendant of a city, town or corporation .. or any new or old inception.. the greater the eclipse is and by how much more near to an Angle the Eclipse falls, the more strong and forcible the Effects demonstrate themselves..."

Will the Real Birth Chart of the U.S.A. Please Stand Up?

by Mary Downing

Editor's Intro
During the protracted "Indecision 2000" situation with regard to the American Presidential election, mundane astrology remained at the forefront of many people's interest. Many astrologers were trying to understand the election and its aftermath, each advocating the use of a wide variety of charts. On the ACT e-mail list (Astrological Conference on Techniques), a ferocious debate re-opened regarding what is the most effective and useful chart to use as the primary (or inception) chart for the U.S.A.

Over the years, an incredible number of proposed charts, beginning with the great many Declaration of Independence Charts, have been proposed as central to any understanding of U.S. affairs. Astrological luminaries of all persuasions have presented long and involved arguments and counter-arguments about each of these. As the discussion on the ACT list continued, it became clear that the main source of disagreement centered around the various times proposed (and used) for the Declaration of Independence chart. In particular, reliable documentation for the July 4 date and times has been nearly impossible to find, but there are other and possibly more compelling reasons to question the use of July 4 charts. For a survey of a few of these charts (there are many!) look at our article archived on this site entitled "Presidential Astrology."

The Golden Section: A Cosmic Principle

By THEODOR LANDSCHEIDT
Previously published in Considerations X: 1

QUESTIONS:
Recent studies have confirmed that the cure of a breast tumor by surgery is dramatically more likely around the 17th day after the beginning of the patient's menstrual period than it is at other times in the menstrual cycle (Hrushesky, 1994). For what reasons?

Conception just in the middle of the ovulation cycle gives an 85% chance of a boy, whereas conception on the 10th day of the cycle is linked to an 87% chance of a girl (Thumshirn, 1975). On what account?

Why has the 11-year sunspot cycle just this length?

Why is the mean period of the secular cycle of sunspot activity—a main factor in climatic change—just 89 years?

Scientists have found significant cycles in rainfall linked to the lunation cycle, but not to the cardinal phases of the Moon. How can we account for this?

Why is it that the "plus zones" in the diurnal circle found by Michel Gauquelin do not fall on the cardinal points of the diurnal circle, but in between and not even symmetrically?

Why does the "Gauquelin effect" not include the Sun, Mercury, and the planets beyond Saturn?

What are there phase reversals in solar-terrestrial cycles that are in the way of dependable predictions?

Scientists and astrologers have found no convincing answers to these questions and many similar ones. Yet it is not unachievable to solve all of these problems. We only have to look without any preconceptions at the dynamics of the solar system, at the cosmic dance performed by the Sun and planets.
