7/10 Mars-Saturn Conjunction

The ancients saw the conjunction of the two traditional malefics, as a violent and stressful, astral combination. Personal charts under duress, have planets or angles near 5 degrees mutable- 5 Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, or Pisces.

If there's a single chart that shows Iran engaged in violent conflict, or full-blown war- it's this one. The Mars-Saturn conjunction sets in Tehran.

Starry Messenger

The Starry Messenger is Phase I of the Electronic History of Astronomy developed in the Whipple Museum of the History of Science and the Department of History and Philosophy of Science.

The aim of this project is to make available electronically some aspects of the early history of astronomy for the use of students studying the History and Philosophy of Science in the University. The project has aspired to be 'educational' in another sense in that graduate students in the Department have contributed to its construction. By drawing on the rich collection of instruments and books in the Whipple Collection, the University Library and the Wren Library, we have sought to produce a history of astronomy which focuses on the uses of astronomy and its instruments, as well as on the practitioners of astronomy. We hope that this project goes some way towards illustrating the variety of uses (astrology, weather prediction, calendar reform) and inspirations (e.g. poetry), people in past societies and cultures found in astronomy.

Dawn of Astrology

A Cultural History of Western Astrology: the Ancient and Classical Worlds
By Nicholas Campion

Editorial Reviews
The Dawn of Astrology covers the period between the first Paleolithic lunar counters around 30,000 BC and the end of the classical world and the rise of Christianity. Nicholas Campion examines the relationships between astrology, religion, magic, and science, as well as its use in politics and the arts with clarity and originality and relates the theory of astrology to examples of its use at all levels of society.

Many have assumed that astrology was invented by the Greeks, but Campion challenges this idea and traces the discipline's roots back to Neolithic culture, Mesopotamian astral divination, Egyptian stellar religion, and attitudes to astrology and celestial prophecy in the Bible. Beginning with theories of the origins of religion in sun-worship and such artifacts as the mysterious, fifteen-thousand year-old "Venus of Lauselle", Campion considers the reasons for the orientation of the pyramids, the latest theories on Stonehenge as a sacred observatory, Greek theories of the ascent of the soul to the stars and the Roman emperor Nero's use of astrology to persecute his rivals. The contribution of Jewish cosmology, which was to be vital in shaping Christian views of astrology, is also investigated and explained.

This is the first comprehensive examination of astrology's origins and examines the foundations of what has become a major feature of popular culture in the contemporary West. Its scope, depth and vast historical breadth--from the Stone Age to the end of the Roman Empire--is greater and more complete than any other book on the subject.

Astrology and Thailand's Discord

From the Associated Press:
"Ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a firm believer in astrology, said Monday the realignment of stars in early July will help defuse political tension that has been building as anti-government protests enter a fourth week.

Thailand's discord heightened Monday after two small bombs exploded in Bangkok, though no one was injured, and the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy tied up traffic for hours in the latest protest against the current government.

"Be patient with the headache-inducing situation until July 2," Thaksin told reporters. "Mars moving close to Saturn causes the headache. When Mars leaves, the situation will ease."

Thailand is a modern, Buddhist nation, but fortunetellers and superstition play a major role in society, even among the Western-educated elite. Political decisions in the past have been known to be influenced by fortunetellers' advice.

Before Thaksin was toppled in a 2006 military coup, respected astrologer and Senator Boonlert Pairintra predicted Thaksin's downfall, saying that the planet Mercury used to favor the prime minister but was later eclipsed by the God of Darkness."

IAU Names Dwarf Planets After Pluto

From msnbc:
"Pluto's years-long identity crisis just got more complex on Wednesday.

The International Astronomical Union has decided on the term "plutoid" as a name for Pluto and other objects that just two years ago were redefined as "dwarf planets."

The surprise decision is unlikely to stem ongoing controversy and confusion, astronomers say."

Earthquake Rocks Northern Japan

From BBC News:
"At least six people are dead and more than 140 injured after a powerful earthquake struck northern Japan, triggering landslides. The 7.2-magnitude quake was centred on Iwate - a rural mountainous region on Japan's main island, Honshu.

Seismologists had issued advance warning of the earthquake - which was followed by more than 150 aftershocks - moments before it struck around 0845 (2343 GMT on Friday).

Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries and experiences thousands of minor tremors each year."

The earthquake chart features the Mars-Node-Chiron conjunction on the horizon, and aligned with Tokyo's Aries ingress Ascendant(23 Leo). The recent stabbings in Tokyo by a deranged assailant, occurred as Mars squared the Aries ingress Midheaven(17 Taurus).

Earthquake Ascendant(19 Leo) = Mars(19 Leo) = S.Node(21 Leo) = Chiron(21 Aquarius).
This Ascendant is -180- the Aries ingress Chiron(19 Aquarius)- angular in Tokyo.
We often find Chiron strongly placed in event charts that reflect physical injuries.

The older 'Meiji' horoscope(2/11/1889, 12pm) for the nation of Japan, appears most responsive at this time.
Meiji Midheaven = 19 Aquarius = the earthquake Ascendant-Mars-Nodes and Chiron. The last solar eclipse(18 Aquarius) of Feb. 7, 2008, conjoined the nation's Midheaven, and transiting Mars just triggered the eclipse degree.

The Majestic Milky Way

The Spitzer Space Telescope's encompasing infrared view of the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy is hard to appreciate in just one picture. In fact, more than 800,000 frames of data from Spitzer's cameras have now been pieced together in an enormous mosaic of the galactic plane- the most detailed infrared picture of our galaxy ever made. The small portion seen here spans nearly 8 degrees, roughly the apparent width of your fist held at arms length, across the galaxy's center. The full mosaic is 120 degrees wide. Highlighted in the false-color presentation are curving green filaments of light from complex molecules- polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)- that on Earth are the common, sooty products of incomplete combustion. The PAHs are found in star forming regions, along with reddish emission from graphite dust particles. Blue specks throughout the picture are individual Milky Way stars.

From BBC News:
Hints of time 'before the Big Bang'
"A team of physicists has claimed that our view of the early Universe may contain the signature of a time before the Big Bang.

The discovery comes from studying the cosmic microwave background (CMB), light emitted when the Universe was just 400,000 years old.

Their model may help explain why we experience time moving in a straight line from yesterday into tomorrow."
