Mars Enters Cancer

Here we go- the planet Mars enters the sign of Cancer for an extended stay, beginning today. Mars is totally out of his element in watery and emotional Cancer, and is subject to passive aggressive behavior(my friend Linea's observation), on and off through May 9, 2008. Mars is retrograde(appears to be moving backwards from our point of view) from Nov. 15 until Jan. 30, 2008, and finally enters Leo on May 9, 2008.

Mars signifies the drive for action, self-assertion, and aggression- while Cancer is concerned with emotional and domestic security. A positive expression of this placement is energetic cooking, gardening, or other home-related activities, where one can put Mars to work effectively. But the tendency for rash or impulsive reactions are exacerbated during this period, especially if we're feeling protective, or threatened in the personal realm. Try to stay in the moment when stuff comes up, and respond accordingly. Watch for reactive behavior.

At the exact minute that Mars is station retrograde(Nov. 15, at 3:26 am, EST), it's culminating(at it's highest point) over Washington, D.C.- and thus signifies a natural time to review and re-evaluate(retrograde) the nation's military affairs, and aggressive interventions(Mars).

*Mars in Cancer, by astrologer Lynn Hayes
"Fiery Mars entered the watery sign of Cancer today. Cancer is the sign of tribe affiliation; in Cancer we protect those that we love and those whom we consider members of our clan as well as our family. In Cancer Mars becomes fiercely protective and emotionally sensitive as well as somewhat reactive and touchy.

Mars will be particularly strong this fall because it will retrograde on November 15 and pass back into Gemini in January before re-entering Cancer in March of 2008, meaning Mars will be moving very slowly back and forth over the same 20 degrees or so until it finally moves on in April of 2008.

Mars is said to be in its fall in the sign of Cancer because Mars is not well expressed in this sign of emotions and self-protection. Molly Cliborne notes, "Some of us confuse aggression for defense in our minds, threatening others because we feel threatened. It’s easy to get a little mixed up when Mars is in Cancer."

We will have a longer time than usual of Mars in Cancer this year, so try not to become enmeshed in family dramas and emotional battles with no clear direction. Objectivity and clarity are key to managing the emotional turmoil that this cycle can bring."

Letters to the Editor

My letter to the Mountain Astrologer magazine published in the Oct./Nov. 2007 issue.

Dear TMA:
Love your magazine.
Phillip Brown's thoughtful article, "Mars, War, and the 2008 Election" (TMA June/July 2007) mentions the contacts from retrograde Mars to the U.S. Sibly(7/4/1776) planets in Cancer and the Scorpionic America(11/15/1777) Mars-South Node conjunction. Yet another powerful link between this Mars cycle and U.S. military affairs is shown by the chart for the actual station retrograde of Nov. 15, 2007, at 3:26 am, EST (8:26 GMT). When the chart is cast for Washington, D.C., Mars is precisely on the Midheaven. (The Midheaven is 12 Cancer 26, and Mars is at 12 Cancer 27!)

The dramatic culmination of stationary Mars over the capital confirms the significance of this period for the United States in re-evaluating the deployment of it's armed forces in Iraq and elsewhere.

The Astrology Fund

"It's easy to dismiss Henry Weingarten's Astrologers Fund as a joke. After all, Nancy Reagan was laughed at for consulting an astrologer during her husband's presidency. And the daily horoscope in the newspapers isn't terribly enlightening.

Still, the moon affects the tides from thousands of miles away and the sun creates most of the weather on earth. So, why can't the movements of the planets and the stars affect financial markets, too?

For instance, earlier this year Weingarten predicted there would be a major downdraft in the stock market on Aug. 28. It was the last total lunar eclipse, a technical and astrological convergence that culminated with the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbling 280 points to test the 13,000 level.

Coincidence? Maybe. But it was enough to make me want to find out what Weingarten was predicting at his conference on Sept. 11, the day of the solar eclipse.

The Astrologers Fund isn't a mutual fund. It's an institutional fund that manages money for high-net worth individuals and institutions. Weingarten declines to say how much he has under management.

According to the fund's Web site, it returned 17% in July, 26% in August and was up 9.7% for the first two weeks of September. However, these are unaudited results.

Weingarten's head isn't solely in the stars. He uses a combination of technical analysis, fundamental analysis and astrological charting to make predictions on the direction of commodities, currencies and stocks. The New York money manager says that when all three converge, a major market move is usually in the works. And most of the time, he can determine its direction, he says.

"We use all the standard fundamental and technical tools, but astrology is most important," says Weingarten. "That's what makes us unique and allows us to capture market surprises most people don't see. It's out-of-the-box thinking." But he adds that if something is overwhelmingly undervalued on a fundamental basis, "I follow that. It depends on the situation."

Weingarten is also a gold bug. In ordinary times, that would be another strike against him. But these aren't ordinary times. Since 2001, when he first recommended that his clients buy gold, the yellow metal's price has surged more than 250%."

South Pole Lunar Eclipse

This is a very cool image of the Aug. 28 lunar eclipse from the South Pole.

Sept. 11 Partial Solar Eclipse

A solar eclipse on Sept. 11, 2007 brings up issues related to the 9/11 attacks, the war on terror, and the Al Qaeda eclipse of Sept. 11, 1988- that fell at the same zodiacal degree(18-19 Virgo). I believe I was one of the first astrologers to notice the important linkage between the charts for these connected events.

The 9/11/07 eclipse chart for the US capital features Mercury- lord of the eclipse rising, with the eclipse itself in the 12th house of secret enemies, self-undoing, and covert activities. Mercury is conjunct Vindemiatrix- the star of widdowhood. The war on terror has produced many widdows, and will certainly create alot more, if Bush has his way.

This eclipse has a volatile potential, in it's opposition with radical Uranus, and square to violent Mars. But a solar eclipse often requires a trigger to set off it's latent energy, and this does'nt ususally occur until some months later. The Oct. 26 Full Moon is one possible eclipse trigger, as this lunation falls precisely on the meridian in D.C., and Mars on the eclipse Midheaven(10 Cancer), while squaring the eclipse Ascendant-Mercury(9 Libra). Both Jupiter and Venus will be activating the 9/11/07 eclipse degree(18 Virgo), as well.

Traditional astrologers prefer the Great Conjunction of 1762(Jupiter conjunct Saturn at 12 Aries) as the most reliable US chart, over any cast for July 4, 1776. This base chart for the US has Mars at 2 Scorpio, with it's progressed Nodes at 2 Taurus-Scorpio. And the Oct. 26, 2007 Full Moon(2 Taurus) activates the US Mars and Nodes, as Mars transits the angles of the USA chart, and those of the 9/11/07 eclipse chart, at the same time. Consequently, if the Sept. 11, 2007 solar eclipse forshadows a violent attack or flashpoint for the US- the Oct. 26 Full Moon may time such an event.
The Libra ingress(Fall Equinox) chart set for Washington, DC, suggests an intense Fall, with acutely, violent power struggles on the agenda- between Bush and Congress, and between the US and it's enemies.

The 9/11/07 eclipse is at the same degree as the Al Qaeda eclipse of Sept. 11, 1988, that occurred with the actual birth of the terrorist group. So there is an echo effect here, that resonates with the 9/11 attacks, and Bush's so-called war on terror.

The partial solar eclipse of 9/11/07 is quite powerful in Lisbon, Portugal, where it conjoins the Midheaven. Watch for major events in Portugal over the next 6 months.

Natally speaking- the 9/11/07 eclipse represents a fresh start, and new beginning in whatever house in your birthchart it falls. But it's potential will unfold over a 6 month period, and it's influence lasts until the next solar eclipse of Feb. 6, 2008.
